New Poll Confirms Voter Support for Legal Access to Natural Kratom and Commonsense Regulation
A new statewide survey conducted by research firm Cygnal of likely Louisiana voters confirms what consumers and advocates have long known: Criminalizing natural kratom is not only misguided — it is deeply out of step with public opinion.
The poll found that a clear majority of Louisianans — 51 percent — oppose classifying kratom as a Schedule 1 substance, while just 28 percent support the move. Voters responded favorably to kratom’s natural origins, its long history of safe use, and its role in helping people manage pain and improve their quality of life.
Voters also drew a sharp line between natural kratom and synthesized derivatives: A majority favor banning these lab-made substances, which are often far more potent, mislabeled, and unregulated — posing much greater risks to consumers.
The data makes clear that voters are not asking lawmakers to ban kratom; they are asking for smart, targeted regulation. A Louisiana version of the Kratom Consumer Protection Act would meet that demand — by implementing age restrictions, labeling requirements, and health warnings, while preserving legal access for responsible adult use.
Louisianans have made their voices clear: The path forward is not prohibition, but thoughtful regulation that protects public health and respects personal freedom.
